Security and crisis management

ABB Corporate Security focuses on processes, instructions and structure on protecting personnel and other assets from danger, loss or crime. As an integrated part of the ABB business, the security network analyzes threats and asset vulnerabilities in order to anticipate threats and mitigate risks.

ABB has strengthened its security capability considerably in recent years with additional company and external experts in different parts of the world.

The nature of risk has grown, and now potentially includes such diverse categories as war and terror, political upheaval, environmental hazards and natural disasters, different kinds of crime, and business intelligence and maritime threats.

One of the recent areas of focus has been on travel security. ABB has a system in place which tracks traveling employees globally and can be used to notify travelers and management of risks and dangerous situations as they occur. In times of crisis ABB Corporate Security can provide advice and support in relocating vulnerable staff and assets.

Security and crisis management exercises were held for 450 managers in 18 countries in 2010 to raise awareness of potential risks and to ensure employees know how to respond to potential threats and incidents.

In addition, a pilot course on facility security - which includes human rights guidelines for site guards - was tested in China, Germany, Singapore, South Africa and the United States and is due to be formally launched In 2011.

New Group-wide security guidelines are also being drawn up, based on the Voluntary Principles for Security and Human Rights, They are due to be finalized in 2011. ABB already requires due diligence on all security companies according to ABB and international standards.
