New Infrared Moisture Sensor launched at Zellcheming Expo

2010-06-30 - HPIR sensor gives papermakers tighter CD control, and faster start-ups and grade changes

Dundalk, Ireland, June 29, 2010 – ABB, the pioneer in Quality Control Systems, officially introduced the new High-Performance Infrared (HPIR) moisture sensor for their QCS800xA Quality Control System (QCS) at the Zellcheming Expo in Wiesbaden, Germany, on June 29, 2010.

The new HPIR, a replacement for ABB’s popular HemiPlus moisture sensor, is designed to improve the performance of both new and existing ABB QCS systems. It is the latest advance in ABB’s 50-plus year history of providing innovation to the pulp and paper industry.

“HPIR helps mills achieve faster grade changes, quicker start-ups and tighter CD control,” says Declan Byrne, Head of Sales & Marketing, ABB Ltd. Quality Control Systems. “This gives papermakers a greater sense of confidence in the accuracy of their moisture measurement. They can shift their moisture targets so they are closer to their quality limits, which helps them save on energy and fiber costs.”

High resolution HPIR sensors were developed to provide papermakers with increased reliability and accuracy. The new ABB moisture sensors calculate measurements 5000 times per second, making them especially precise tools. Designed to significantly increase signal-to-noise ratio, HPIRs can measure moisture streaks as narrow as 4 mm.

HPIR is the only moisture sensor on the market with no continuously-moving parts and they do not require liquid cooling. The sensors’ modular design allows mill personnel to easily replace modules on-site. As a result, mills can avoid factory repairs and eliminate having to stock complete spare sensors.
